The Third Sunday Concert Series at Christ Episcopal Church, Covington will host tenor Tyler Smith and soprano Betsy Uschkrat on Sunday, October 21, 2018, at 5 p.m. (doors open at 4:30). The talented musicians will perform American Songbook standards, Classical and Operatic favorites, as well as compositions of Bill Horne. Both are on the music faculty of Loyola University of New Orleans.

Betsy Uschkrat has mesmerized audiences with performances of classical, musical theatre, and the great American Songbook repertoire. The New Orleans Times-Picayune has described her as a “vocal powerhouse.” Recent roles include Pamina in Die Zauberflüte, Sharon in Masterclass, Julie Jordan in Carousel, Blanche in Dialogues of the Carmelites, and Donna Anna in Don Giovanni. Recent symphonic work includes: Mendelssohn’s Elijah, Handel’s Messiah, Mozart’s Requiem, and Poulenc’s Gloria. She was the winner of several operatic competitions and was a two-time Regional Finalist for the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions while attending Indiana University and competing in the Miss America Pageant as Miss Indiana 2006.

Dr. Uschkrat teaches at Loyola University in the Classical Voice Department and the Popular and Commercial Music degree program.

Tyler Smith is a Dramatic tenor who has appeared in numerous operatic and concert performances throughout the United States, Europe, and South America. Recent roles include Rodolfo in La bohéme, Canio in I Pagliacci, Maxwell in The Widow’s Lantern, Max in Der Freischütz, Cavaradossi in Tosca, Otello in Otello and Riccardo in The Masked Ball and more. On the concert stage, he has performed with the Caritas Chorale, Houston Symphony, Orchestra X, Corpus Christi Symphony, and the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra. Highlights include Vaughan Williams’ Hodie, Rossini’s Stabat Mater, Haydn’s Creation, Dvorak’s Stabat Mater, the Verdi Requiem, the Mozart Requiem, Handel’s Messiah, Goodall’s Eternal Light Requiem, Beethoven’s Mass in C and 9th Symphony.

Mr. Smith has received degrees from Southeastern Louisiana University, the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, and his Doctorate from the University of Houston. He is currently a full-time faculty Instructor of Voice and Vocal Pedagogy at Loyola University in New Orleans. 

All concerts in the Third Sunday Concert Series are free and open to the public. They are followed by a wine and hors d'oeuvres reception in the Parish Hall where the audience has the opportunity to meet and greet the performers.  The Parish Hall is located behind the church.

Christ Episcopal Church, Covington is located at 120 S. New Hampshire Street at the entrance to Bogue Falaya Park. Handicap entrance is available on the Park side of the church.
